When we say “resistance” in an electrical circuit, really all we’re answering is how hard a material is working to block the flow of electricity. It is measured in something called ohms.
All wires or devices within a circuit have at least some resistance. An average level of resistance allows electricity to safely flow. But when there’s something wrong, like a short circuit, resistance has a lot to do with what goes wrong.
So, What’s a Short Circuit?
A short circuit occurs when electricity takes a shortcut. Instead of following the safe and planned path through wires and through devices, the electricity finds a faster (and unsafe) path.
This could occur if a live (hot) wire comes into contact with a neutral wire, for example a neutral wire within a light fixture or a switch, or if a live (hot) wire touches metal on a light switch, range or clothes dryer. It can create sparks, smoke or even fires. That’s why short circuits are risky and we must take them seriously.
How Do I Know If My Electrical System HasA Short Circuit?
One common indicator is when your circuit breaker trips, turning off power to prevent damage or danger. You may also detect burning smells, buzzing noises, or see the lights flickering.
How Resistance Affects This
Low resistance = too much electricity running through, too fast. This can be when the wires are wet, damaged, poorly insulated or a combination of these.
High resistance = not enough electricity getting through. That may indicate that wires are corroded or burned, and it’s possible they can get too hot.
In either scenario, you have a problem that you must solve.
