Do Ceiling Fans Use a Lot of Electricity?

Cas Pro Plumbing Services.

We’ve all been shocked by an electricity bill that was much higher than we expected. And the worst part is that unlike online shopping, you can’t get a refund, there’s no way to get the energy back; you used it, and now you have to pay for it.

So when your electricity bill skyrockets month after month, it’s natural to wonder what’s causing the increase. Could ceiling fans use a lot of electricity and be part of the problem? In this blog, we’ll cover the electricity costs for different appliances and some tips on how to save money.

What Is Really Happening To My Electricity Bill?

The shock of your electricity bill happens when you have already consumed energy and don’t even know the real reason why. Even if you have several appliances connected in your home or work, it is important to stop and analyze whether any of them are contributing too much electricity.
Remember that saving energy not only helps you save money, but reducing your electricity use also reduces your home’s carbon footprint.

How to Measure Electricity Consumption

Let’s assume that your electric meter is working properly and that your electric bill hasn’t increased recently. Electricity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), and one kilowatt is equal to 1,000 watts. So, one kilowatt-hour is simply one kilowatt of energy used in one hour. So, if you have a 1,000-watt appliance and you use it for one hour, you have used 1 kWh of energy.

To monitor how much you have been using in your home, do the following simple calculation:

This month’s meter reading – Last month’s reading = Total kWh used

Once you know how many kWh you are using each month, your next step is to figure out which appliances are using more energy than others.

Ceiling Fans vs. Other Appliances

Now that we know how to monitor energy consumption, as an example mentioned earlier, let’s see how much a ceiling fan consumes in relation to other appliances in your home. See the table below; this way, it will be easier for you to analyze:

ApplianceApprox. WattageDaily Hours UsedMonthly kWh
Ceiling Fan30–75 watts8 hours/day7–18 kWh
Central AC2000–5000 watts6 hours/day360–900 kWh
Water Heater3000–4500 watts3 hours/day270–405 kWh
Clothes Dryer1800–5000 watts1 hour/day54–150 kWh

As you can see, ceiling fans consume much less energy than heating or cooling systems in your home, up to 10 times less. Therefore, even if you use a fan all day, it is not the main cause of your high electricity bill.

What Role Do Ceiling Fans Play, Then?

Because ceiling fans are always moving and maybe more noticeable than other household appliances, people frequently worry about them. However, as we have shown, they are not the primary offenders because they use relatively little electricity.

The majority of models use 30 to 75 watts. A 75-watt fan running eight hours a day for 30 days is equivalent to around 18 kilowatt-hours every month. A central air conditioner, on the other hand, can use between 2,000 and 5,000 watts, which can result in hundreds of kWh being added to your account in a matter of weeks.

Don’t worry, though; ceiling fans use very little power. And now you know how to calculate how much.

You Can Save On A Small Amount

If your electricity bill is worrying you, try to save on a small amount. That said, even small devices can add up to high consumption at the end of the month. Think about how many things you have connected right now, maybe your cell phone charger, your television, laptop, router, refrigerator, freezer…

Each one may consume little electricity on its own. But together, and running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, they can contribute to that high bill that you don’t like. So, take a close look at your habits and everything that is connected, sucking up electricity and emptying your pocket.
